Installation of AI SafetyCam Auxiliary Camera:

Step 1: Power Supply to the Auxiliary Camera:

Connect the Auxiliary camera to 12V or 24V ignition power using the attached power cables via a fuse.

Alternatively:

  • Each auxiliary camera must be fused at the connection point at 2 amps.
  • The red wire is connected to a vehicle ignition circuit.
  • The black wire is connected to the vehicle ground/chassis.

Warning

  • This installation must be performed by a qualified or professional person. Working with your vehicle's power system can be dangerous. Consult a professional for guidance.
  • Connecting an aux cam to an ignition power supply is always recommended.
  • Avoid connecting the aux camera to a constant power supply (to the OBD-II port), as this could drain the vehicle's battery.

Step 2: Pair a Wi-Fi Auxiliary Camera to your AI SafetyCam:

Once you've connected the aux camera to an ignition power source, pair it with the vehicle's safetycam. Pairing the aux camera to the safetycam enables the safetycam to pull recordings from the aux camera and upload them to the cloud. We have tested pairing up to three aux cameras with a main AI SafetyCam. All the aux cameras connected to an AI SafetyCam must be paired the same way.

Important Prerequisite:

  • Maximum distance between an aux camera and the main camera is approximately 10 feet.

Points to Note for Auxiliary Camera Connectivity Verification:

  • Make sure the aux camera is connected to power.
  • Use any device that connects to WiFi, such as a phone or tablet, to check that the camera can find the available Wi-Fi networks (it appears as AuxCamera_XXXXXX).
  • When connecting multiple aux cameras, the first one disconnects when another is paired. It will reconnect on its own in about a minute.
  • Maximum number of aux cameras that can be installed in a vehicle is three.
  • The Wi-Fi connection can be affected by the distance and the amount of metal between the aux camera and the safetycam.
  1. When you are in the parked vehicle with the parking brake on, the ignition on, and the door closed, press the touchscreen of the safetycam to view the PIN screen.
  2. Enter the default PIN 3333 to unlock the safetycam for the first time, or your admin PIN subsequently. The screen unlocks and the menu appears:

  1. Press Settings.

  1. Scroll down and press WiFi.
  2. Toggle the button to turn on the Mobile Hotspot.

  1. Return to the Settings menu.
  2. Scroll down and press Add Cameras

The safetycam searches for available unpaired aux cameras. This can take up to a minute.

  1. A snapshot from the aux camera appears on the screen. If it is the aux camera you want to pair with the safetycam, press YES.
Note: If it is not the aux camera you want to pair with, press NO. The safetycam continues to search for available, unpaired cameras.

The aux camera is paired to the safetycam. This can take up to a minute.

  1. Press DONE.

You are taken back to the Settings screen. Repeat steps 7 through 9 for any additional aux cameras.

Note: After another aux camera is paired, the first one disconnects. It reconnects on its own in about a minute.
  1. To confirm that the aux camera paired successfully, scroll down, and press More Info.

From this screen, you can see all the aux cameras that are connected to your safetycam.

Note: If one or more aux cameras don't appear, exit the More Info screen, wait about a minute to make sure they have all reconnected, and re-enter. The paired aux cameras should all appear.

Step 3: Mount an Auxiliary Camera & Adjust the Viewing Angles:

Once you've connected the aux camera to a power source and paired it with the safetycam, mount the camera.

  • Mounting at different spots of the vehicle enables tracking and video recording of additional perspectives during trips.
  • Up to three aux cameras can be paired with each safetycam.

Step 3(a): Mounting flush-mount auxiliary cameras:

Note: Flush-mount cameras are also known as rear cameras.

Screw the mounting bracket attached to the camera into the vehicle structure at the desired location. The weight of the camera alone will destroy the skin panels on the doors.

Note: We recommend using either:

  • M5 machine screws (stainless steel or zinc anodized) with pan heads and M5 rivet nutserts
  • M6 machine screws and nyloc nuts and washers

If you attach the camera to a single panel, you also need a support plate behind the panel.

Note:

  • Make sure there is some slack in the cable to allow for adjustment.
  • Aux camera mounting brackets are different than safetycam mounting brackets. They cannot be used interchangeably.

Step 3(b): Mounting wrap-mount auxiliary cameras:

Note: Wrap-mount cameras are also known as side cameras.
  1. Place the silicone pad along the top of the camera.

The silicone pad has ridges that enable you to cushion the camera when using the hose clamps for installation, provides a better seal, and prevents scratching.

  2. Slide the hose clamps through the slots at the top of the camera.

  1. Place the hose clamps around the desired location on the vehicle.
  2. Tighten the hose clamps with the attached screws.
  3. Verify that the camera is secure enough to stay in place.

Step 3(c): Adjust the viewing angles of an auxiliary camera:

Once you've connected the aux camera to an ignition power source, paired it to the safetycam, and mounted it, you can adjust the viewing angles. Cameras with different viewing angles enable live view and recording of additional perspectives during trips.

Let’s understand how to adjust the viewing angles of:

  • flush-mount cameras
  • wrap-mount cameras

Step 3(d): Adjusting the viewing angles of a flush-mount camera:

Note: Flush-mount cameras are also known as rear cameras.
  1. Loosen the screws on each side of the mounting bracket, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  1. Loosen the screws on each side of the lens at the bottom of the camera, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  1. Adjust the lens.
  2. Check the viewing angle of the lens through the Surfsight® Portal live view or from the safetycam recordings.
  3. Tighten the screws.

Step 3(e): Adjusting the viewing angles of a wrap-mount camera:

Note: Wrap-mount cameras are also known as side cameras.

Auxiliary Camera Overview:

  • The cameras are installed around the vehicle in key locations.
  • All aux cameras include a 64GB SD card that stores approximately 100 hours of recordings.
  • When the SD card is full, new recordings overwrite the oldest recordings.
Warning: Opening the aux camera ball voids the warranty.

The diagrams below show the installation and connectivity between the safetycam and aux cameras.

How does it work?

  1. When the vehicle engine is turned on, aux cameras record video. There is no standby mode after the vehicle engine is powered off.
  2. The video is saved on the aux camera SD cards in two minute files. Each file is approximately 20 MB in size.
  3. The safetycam checks for aux camera recordings approximately once a minute, one aux camera at a time.
  4. Any available video files are pulled. Each transfer takes about thirty seconds.
  5. The safetycam SD card contains all recordings, from the safetycam and connected aux cameras.
Note: When aux cameras are connected to a safetycam, the available memory in the safetycam SD card is split between the safetycam and all connected aux cameras.
