Understanding QR Code Pairing
1. What is QR code pairing?
QR code pairing is an easy and reliable way to pair drivers and vehicles in the Azuga Fleet. By leveraging the QR capabilities native to modern smartphones, Azuga’s customers can pair drivers and vehicles without the need for any specialized hardware or apps.
Knowing who drove a given vehicle and when is essential for fleet managers to be able to track driver behavior over time. Having this visibility enables Azuga customers to drive significant improvements in safety and efficiency via reporting, coaching and rewards.
2. What are the prerequisites to use QR code pairing?
There are two simple prerequisites - identify the driver and identify the vehicle.
- Drivers can be identified using either their mobile phone number or by logging into the Azuga Fleet Mobile app (AFM)
- Vehicles are identified using a standard QR code generated from the VIN (vehicle identification number)
3. How can I get started using QR code pairing?
QR Pairing is an account-level setting in Azuga Fleet. To start using it today, please reach out to your Customer Success Representative, write to cutomercare@azuga.com, or call the Azuga support team at (866) 475-3018.
4. Do I need to use Azuga Fleet mobile?
No. If a mobile number is associated with a Driver within Azuga Fleet, there is no need to use Azuga Fleet Mobile.
Drivers who already use AFM to be more efficient in the field will be prompted to pair with a vehicle on their mobile device and the AFM app will open the camera when they accept.
Note - It is best practice to use both AFM and to assign mobile phone numbers in Fleet!
5. How can I check the pairing confirmation on the Web?
Driver pairing event can be seen on the Azuga web app at the following places:
- Live map
- Breadcrumb
- WWW report
- Multi-vehicle breadcrumb
6. As a Driver, how do I know if the pairing has been successful?
After a driver makes a pairing request they will receive a text message confirmation

or push notifications if they are using AFM. The driver can also check the pairing status on the AFM app.

7. As a Driver, how do I know if the pairing fails?
After a driver makes a pairing request using his phone they will receive a text message confirmation on failure or push notification if they use Azuga Fleet Mobile.

8. How long will the driver be paired with the vehicle?
Drivers will remain paired until:
- The driver unpairs themselves,
- An Admin unpairs the driver in the Azuga Fleet web application
- Some other driver pairs with that vehicle
9. Example on how to pair using QR Code
Azuga Fleet Mobile:
In the Azuga Fleet Mobile app

Important: The Pairing tile only appears on the AFM Dashboard if the account's pairing preference is QR Code/Bluetooth/Manual/No Pairing.
Upon successful detection of the vehicle by the scanner:
- The Pairing Complete screen will appear.
- Click Done to return to the Dashboard.
Upon failure of the scanner to detect the vehicle:
- AFM will display an error message indicating that the QR code is not valid for an Azuga vehicle.
- You may choose to pair manually to retry the pairing process.
Azuga Fleet Mobile will send push notifications to the phone that submitted the pairing request upon pair and unpair events.

Pairing via text message (without Azuga Fleet Mobile)
The QR reader in your smartphone’s camera will send a text message to Azuga to complete the pairing process. A camera phone with QR code scanning capability and a working data plan are required to pair with vehicles seamlessly without the need for an AFM app.
Step - 1: Launch Camera/QR Code Scanner on your Phone

Step - 2: Scan the QR Code

Step - 3: Send the Pre Filled text message. Important: The phone number of the sending phone must be associated with a Driver in Azuga Fleet for the pairing to be successful.

Step - 4: Pairing Successful message will be received

10. Is QR Code pairing dependent on Vehicle Ignition?
No, QR Code pairing is not dependent on the status of the vehicle's ignition.
11. Can the QR code be transferred if we move a device from one vehicle to another or do we need to get a new one?
The QR code is associated with the vehicle and not the device. It is generated using the VIN of the vehicle. For a new vehicle, a new QR code will be generated.
