ELD Android - December Updates 2025

Improvements: 

  • The Ontario Operational Use Exemption in the Azuga ELD platform has been enhanced to improve HOS compliance tracking, driver status reporting, and exemption management for vehicles operating within Ontario. 
  • We have updated the application to ensure that the selected color theme is applied consistently across all dashboard elements.  
  • We have introduced a new Ontario Volunteer Firefighters Exemption feature in the Mobile UI, providing a 2-hour Hours of Service (HOS) exemption for volunteer firefighters, in accordance with Regulation 555/06 (3.1) under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997. 
  • We have enhanced the IFTA State Mileage functionality to support additional alternative fuel types across the Azuga ELD app and portal. 
  • We are updating the minimum supported Android operating system version for the Azuga ELD Mobile application to ensure improved performance, enhanced security, and better compatibility with the latest Android platform updates. 

Improvements Deep Dive:

Ontario Operational Use Exemption Enhanced Driver Exemption Management 

Previously, exemptions could be inconsistently applied, misclassified in logs, or removed unexpectedly when crossing provincial boundaries. These enhancements ensure that exemptions are clearly defined, correctly activated, and accurately reflected in driver logs and exported reports. 

What’s New: 

  1. Manual Activation & Automatic Removal 
  • Drivers can manually activate the exemption within Ontario limits. 
  • Exemptions are automatically removed when the driver leaves Ontario, preventing misuse outside the province. 
  • Ensures exemption periods are accurately tracked without affecting non-exempt HOS rules. 
  1. Improved Logging & Classification 
  • Driver status (OnDuty, Driving, OffDuty) continues to be tracked even when the exemption is active. 
  • Clocks run normally, but HOS violations are not triggered during exemption periods. 
  • Exemptions are clearly visible in DVIR, log screens, and exported data (PDF, CSV, CCMTA). 
  1. Exemption Types & Conditions 
  • Multiple exemption types now supported, including: 
  • Farm/Forest/Sea/Lake Products – for transporting primary products. 
  • Emergency Vehicles – cardiac arrest, emergency relief, municipal response. 
  • Large Crane & Support Vehicles – for certified crane operations. 
  • Pick-Up Trucks (Personal Use) – for noncommercial purposes. 
  • Each exemption includes unique conditions and eligibility rules to ensure compliance. 
  1. Accurate Data Export & Reporting 
  • Exempted events appear in all exported formats as performed by the driver. 
  • Ensures FMCSA/CCMTA reporting accurately reflects exemption of usage. 
  • Prevents errors in compliance audits or regulatory submissions. 
  1. UI & Workflow Enhancements 
  • Exemption activation and removal now follow a consistent workflow within the app. 
  • Clearer indicators in logs and DVIR screens help drivers and admins track exemption status in real time. 


Improved Color Theme for Diagnostics and Malfunction Popups

Previously, even when the “Default (Blue)” color theme was selected in Settings → Device, the Diagnostics and Malfunction popup labels were displayed in grey. This caused a mismatch between the selected theme and the actual display, potentially affecting visual clarity and user experience.

With this improvement, the Diagnostics and Malfunction popup labels now correctly reflect the selected “Default (Blue)” theme. This update ensures a consistent user interface, better visual alignment with user preferences, and an enhanced overall experience.

Ontario Volunteer Firefighter Exemption Mobile UI

Key Highlights:

1.      Activation Rules

  • The exemption is available only within Ontario.
  • It applies only while performing volunteer firefighter duties.
  • Drivers must manually activate the exemption in the app.
  • Once activated, the driver is exempt from all HOS limits for the duration of the exemption.

2.     Duration & Frequency

  • The exemption lasts up to 2 consecutive hours per driver day (from start Time to the next 24 hours).
  • Must be one continuous block; it cannot be split, paused, or restarted within the same driver day.
  • The system will auto end the exemption after 2 hours.
  • Exemption is removed automatically once the driver leaves Ontario.
  • Manual duty status changes or the end of the driver day will immediately terminate the exemption.

3.     Classification in Logs

  • All time under the exemption is legally treated as OFF DUTY, even if the driver is actively driving or on duty.

4.    Interaction with Vehicle Movement

  • If the vehicle moves (ELD auto-switches to driving), the system overrides or reclassifies the event as off-duty (exempt) to maintain compliance.
  • The exemption is not interrupted by ELD auto status changes.

5.     Counting Toward Off Duty Rest

  • Exemption time counts toward the required 8 consecutive off duty hours, ensuring regulatory compliance for driver rest.
  • Example: 6 hr rest + 1.5 hr fire call (exempt) + 1 hr rest = 8.5 hr consecutive off duty.

6.    Data Export (CCMTA / PDF / CSV)

  • All exemption time is recorded and exported as OFF DUTY in compliance reports and logs.

Benefit:

This enhancement ensures that volunteer firefighters in Ontario can perform emergency duties without violating HOS regulations, while maintaining accurate logs and regulatory compliance.

Support for New Fuel Types in IFTA State Mileage Reporting 

Previously, Electricity, Hydrogen, and Hythane fuel types were not available in fuel receipt uploads or IFTA related reports, limiting accurate reporting for alternative fuel vehicles. With this update, these fuel types are now fully supported throughout the system. When uploading fuel receipts in the Azuga ELD app, users can select Electricity, Hydrogen, or Hythane, and the unit of measure is automatically applied based on the selected fuel type. Electricity uses kilowatt-hours (kWh), while Hydrogen and Hythane use kilograms or pounds. 

On the portal, these fuel types are now available in Fuel Receipts under State Mileage, IFTA State Mileage reports, and State Mileage Tax Rate configuration within Admin Tools. This improvement ensures consistent data capture, accurate mileage and tax calculations, and improved support for alternative-fuel and clean-energy fleets. 

Minimum Supported Android OS Version Update

What’s changing?

  • The minimum supported Android version will increase from Android 5.0 (API 21) to Android 6.0 (API 23).

What this means for users:

  • Devices running Android 6.0 or later will continue to receive app updates and support.
  • Devices running Android 5.0 or below will no longer receive new updates or support after this release.

We recommend upgrading your device’s operating system where possible to continue receiving the latest features, security updates, and performance improvements.
